This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

"A growing body of evidence suggests that music could trump many of the much more expensive “fixes” that we have thrown at the education system. Research shows that music training boosts IQ, focus and persistence." - The Wall Street Journal.

At our high school in Bushwick, Brooklyn, the students yearn for the opportunity to create a musical environment that fosters creativity, community, and commitment.

Our small high school has limited space and because of that, the music room is shared in a large multipurpose room that doubles as a gym and event space. All to often, our music students are distracted by the large void of space that is the "Multipurpose room". This room divider is an essential addition to the program that will add to the success of our music program.

Our music curriculum is robust and most importantly equitable. The program encompasses music history, notation, instrumental, theory and culturally responsive music pedagogy. A room divider will also allow the students to feel a sense of ownership for the program. This specific divider will also double as a stage "curtain" which will enable us to be able to put on concerts and shows.

Needless to say, this piece of equipment will create a warm, welcoming and safe learning environment for music and our students. The more time one spends in a music program, the more they are to say it has been influential in contributing to their current level of personal fulfillment.
