What would you rather see when you arrived at school: a dilapidated house or a beautiful community garden? Help us give our school a face lift! Our at-risk school of about 200 low-income minority students is located in an urban setting. As the science and technology teacher, I have the opportunity to work with every child in our schoolwide Title I program from kindergarten through grade 5.

These children often do not spend time exploring nature out of doors. They lack the experiences that come from walking through the forest, splashing in a stream, and planting gardens. Fortunately for us, a piece of recently vacated property at our entrance has been purchased for the school to transform into a community garden. We have built partnerships with a nearby botanical garden and a sustainability non-profit. With their help, we have brought in compost and created a plan for the garden. Now we need to get dirty!

This project is primed and ready to begin. In order to get the students involved, we will need garden tools, including a wheelbarrow to transport plants, and a place to safely store this equipment when it is not in use. Students will learn how to identify, plant, care for, and harvest the fruits of their labor. At the same time, it is our vision for students in this urban neighborhood to reap the benefits by taking the fruits and vegetables home for consumption and encouraging them to take part in other sustainability projects.

This is one of many P.O.N.D. projects that I have in mind for our students. Please consider helping me to promote purposeful, outdoor, nature, discovery among these students in need by supplying us with the garden tools, a wheelbarrow, and a storage shed. With your support I know that we will not only transform a piece of property but we will also transform the lives of students and the lives of many people living in this community.
