About My Students

LaAsha is bright, warm, and enthusiastic about learning, taking a particular interest in social justice issues. Alejandro is a talented jazz guitarist who is fascinated by empathy and human connection, and wants to develop school-based movements that help people understand each other better. Rajendra's good humor and thoughtfulness often help bring out the best in his peers and make academic challenges more enjoyable. Maya startles collaborators with her fresh perspectives and innovative experiments with thinking and learning processes.

This is a fascinating project because of the range of skills it must incorporate. To produce and distribute a magazine, one needs to create content, organize it with software, collaborate with contributors and editors, allocate funding and wisely spend it, and come up with and execute a promotional plan. Subsequent printing would depend on successful distribution and management of funds. Each required action is directly applicable to a practical, social or creative skill that is relevant to our students’ futures. Students will have to work together intensively to build this magazine. That in itself builds empathy, but the subject matter requires students to engage in difficult conversations surrounding systemic injustice and hope for change. They will have to figure out how to delegate and complete tasks, but also how to be mindful of each other’s feelings and desires around very important subject matter.

In Their Own Words

Our first publication will be an experimental journal: it will include arts and letters with an activist ethos - it would include news, writing, visual art, and possible links to other media. The central focus would be on increasing awareness of social injustice, promoting human rights, and celebrating art, news and activism that focuses on building community and protecting the world. Moving forward, subsequent publications will cover a range of topics, but activism, awareness, and brother/sisterhood will likely be a thread through all issues.

On our journey to breathe life into “The Collection”, our team will focus on working collaboratively to make our magazine grow. We will have roles such as lead designer, a finance manager, and content/material handler. These roles will have one or two people in charge but they will treat everyone in the workspace equally and fairly, and remain open to every thought or idea brought to the group. This will all happen during our club period on Friday afternoons. Our lead roles will have separate meetings during the week to discuss the magazine and the direction it’s heading in.

Inequality doesn’t belong to just one category; there are many types of inequality, such as gender, class, and opportunity, to name a few. Inequality has seen many places, such as a home or a school. Our team wishes to help inform the people that inequality does exist, and we could end it together.

When I say together, what does it mean? Together, our Think It Up team will have a series of issues to tackle.
