My Project

For the past three years, second graders at our elementary school in Waldoboro, Maine have partnered with a local water and soil conservation group to hold a Pollinator Party. This event teaches students about pollination through engaging hands-on outdoor learning experiences. The program demonstrates how plants depend on animals for pollination and also directly addresses a Second Grade Next Generation Science Standard, while also linking life sciences with food systems and nutrition.

The donation of garden beds will allow my students to be able to plant a pollinator garden in the courtyard of our school.

Planting these gardens will teach students the importance of pollinators to our ecosystem. Students also take part in other interactive outdoor learning stations such as journaling, a live beehive demo, insect catching, honey and fruit tasting, and a read-aloud.

Our school is a Pre-K through grade 6 school in mid-coast Maine with about 365 students. 60% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch and the Pollinator Party program provides an outdoor learning experience that many of our students would otherwise not have access to.
