JT, Wendy and Thomas have a love for fishing and want to learn the science behind ice fishing.
We have a new class being offered this semester and learning the science behind Ice Fishing is included in this class. Students will learn the science behind the speed and safety of ice freezing and thawing and also learn about when fish are more apt to bite the line. Students want to do more than learn about it they want to test what they are learning though there isn't equipment in our school to safely go out on the ice and do this. These students want to go out on the ice and do some hands on learning in a safe environment.
Students will drill through the ice in various parts of the lake and take ice samples, measure the thickness and keep track of temperatures of both air and water. Students will track when fish will bite and when they won't or when they are more likely to bite. All fish will be catch and release, if a fish is hurt and cannot safely be released it will be donated to a food shelf. Students will learn teamwork as this is not something that can be done alone as they must set up tents, test samples and track data. They will be using real-life problem solving skills on site as they work together as things don't always work they way we want them to when we are doing experiments. Students will also learn about empathy toward others by donating fish to those who are in need.
In Their Own Words
We want to learn about the things we are reading about and watching videos about by doing hands on experiments. We have a lake near by but we don't have the equipment to needed. We live in an area that ice fishing is a big part of our lives and we think it is so important that we have the hands on experience to better understand and engage in our learning. We learn better and remember more when we are able to do things with our hands and bodies rather than sitting in a desk.
My teacher has agreed to take us out to the lake and help set up the equipment. She will supervise and educate us on the safety of what we are doing. She will drill the holes and store all the equipment. It will be our job to do the hands on work. We have agreed to help create lesson plans that will help teach what we want to learn about the science behind ice fishing.
This is important to our community because every year so many people fall through the ice. It is important to know and understand how to know when it is safe to go out on the ice and how to stay safe while doing something we enjoy. The problem is that the equipment is expensive and we need help to pay for it.
