I am a fourth grade teacher at a school located in East Los Angeles. I have 19 students of various ethnic backgrounds, including Mexican, Chinese, and Honduran. This year my students and I are focusing on integrating visual arts and language arts. We studied the photograph Human Erosion by Dorothea Lange in order to inspire descriptive writing. When describing the woman in the photograph, the students' language really came alive. They were motivated to use strong word choice and varied sentence structure to make their writing interesting and compelling. Now, I would like for them to use their own photography as a springboard for descriptive narrative writing, as well as connect the visual arts standard for showing how the arts reflect life. Students will use Polaroid cameras to take portraits of classmates which convey a specific emotion. They will look at other photos and paintings to find out how artists use gestures and facial expressions to convey different feelings. They will then take their own photographs and write a story that goes with their photograph. Being able to participate in this photography activity will have a tremendously positive effect on my students' learning. In addition to being motivated to hone their descriptive writing skills, they will have the opportunity to practice an art form that they rarely experience in elementary school. In order to complete this activity, I need at least 5 Polaroid instant cameras and film for each one.
