Polarimetry in Organic Chemistry Lab

Help me give my students a polarimeter for use in the organic chemistry laboratory. Polarimetry allows for the analysis of the optical activity of organic compounds, which provides one of the only ways to distinguish between certain molecules.

My Project

Polarimetry is a method for analyzing the optical activity of organic compounds.

Certain organic compounds differ only in their spatial arrangement, such they their mirror image is actual a different compound.

Polarimetry represents the easiest laboratory method for distinguishing between these compounds. Our students compound at lab in which they start with a 50/50 mixture of a compound and its mirror image. They proceed through a series of laboratory techniques to separate these compounds, which is quite challenging as they share most of the same physical properties.

Once they complete this, polarimetry provides the most efficient method for them to analyze how well they did. One of the compounds rotates polarized light in a clockwise fashion, the other rotates polarized light in a counterclockwise direction. The polarimeter allows the experimenter to determine how much the plane of polarized light is being rotated by a solution of a compound and in what direction.
