Poland Personally: Studying the Holocaust First-Hand

I need to participate in "Poland Personally: A Study Seminar of Poland" so that I can visit Holocaust sites and learn from survivors and historians and bring that information back to my students.

My Students

The best thing about being a special education teacher is that every single day you get a brand new opportunity to do great things in the lives of your students. Not everyone can say that about their career. Being a co-teacher, I am blessed with the opportunity to go into all core subject classrooms with my students every day.

At Bridge Street, our motto is "We are a Family." This couldn't be any more true- I see it every day in the actions and attitudes of our students and our staff.

We go above and beyond to make sure our students feel safe and taken care of. Many of our students come from difficult home environments where the challenges they see outside of school far outweigh the challenges from inside. It is our mission to ensure each student receives a quality education tailored to fit all of their needs.

My Project

As a teacher, there are not many opportunities that allow you to experience a historical site first-hand that you teach about every year in your own classroom. The unit of Holocaust study we do is extensive. We begin with historical background, and move on to all other aspects of WWII and the Holocaust. To be able to see these horrific places first-hand is the chance of a lifetime. If ever there is a way to help my students better understand something, it is our job as a teacher to seek it out. Being able to travel alongside my co-teacher to concentration camps with a Holocaust survivor will allow me to do just that. Expanding my knowledge, bringing back my own photos and sharing my experiences will benefit my students in ways we have never been able to before.
