My Students

"Hey, Mr. Hancock! My mom was convinced that I was sick over the weekend."

"Really?

Why did she think that you were sick?"

"Because I was sitting around all day yesterday reading the book I borrowed from you."

"Why would that make her think that you were sick?"

"Mr. Hancock, don't you know? I've never done that before . . . actually, this is the first book that I've ever read all the way through in my entire life! My mom thought that I was sick because I was sitting reading a book without being forced to . . ."

Yes, that conversation actually happened in my classroom four years ago. Many of my students come from broken homes where the parent is working two jobs just to keep bread on the table. Reading and homework are not a priority when stressors of life pile up and parents are simply too exhausted from trying to hold everything together.

As an English teacher in a high poverty area of Los Angeles, knowing that I've played a small role in igniting their passion for reading is one of the greatest joys in my life!

My Project

Throughout this coming year, my students and I will experience and respond to the world around us in a special way; The Poet's Way. As our culminating project, each student will create a collection of poems from other authors as well as several original creations.

Much of this process requires a printer so students can format their poems for printing so they can include each one in their final project.

Students who see the tangible results of their work get more inspired to do really well. This leads to high-quality projects that turn into keepsakes. I currently have two projects from 7 years ago that I use as examples of what they can create.

The color printer will really take this assignment to the next level!
