Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Special Education teacher in a New York City public high school. I teach 9th and 10th grade self-contained English and resource room. The disabilities of my students include speech/language impairments, ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger's, severe emotional disturbance, and more. All of my students are bright, motivated people who need that extra push to succeed. I am touched and inspired by their ability to face these tremendous obstacles.

My 10th grade Special Education English class is completing a poetry unit. I tried to make this unit fun and relevant for my students by discussing how poetry is used in everyday life. Every time I taught my students a new concept (i.e. alliteration, simile, metaphor), I brought in hip-hop lyrics demonstrating the concept we were learning. We then listened to the hip-hop music in class and talked about the effect of the literary element.

I want my students to create a poetry poster as a final assessment for this unit. I want students to consider how poetry can be used in advertising by creating an advertisement for a product of their choice. Their slogans must reflect the literary elements we have learned about in class. I believe this is a fun way for students to show me how much they have learned over the past few weeks. I know that if they are given the proper resources, they will create impressive and innovative posters!

This assignment will allow my students to use a creative outlet in manifesting their knowledge. This type of assessment is crucial in a special education classroom. My students' disabilities make it very difficult to complete traditional assessments such as term papers. Your donation will make it possible for my students to complete their final projects.
