My Students

"Poetry is thoughts that breathe and words that burn," said Thomas Gray. My students have not felt the burning of words or the breath of thoughts that poetry can possess. My students need to experience the pleasure and power of reading poetry.

My sixth grade students attend a middle school in Tennessee.

They are readers who are shaping their reading life with literary experiences. My students are building their foundation of skills for high school and beyond everyday. They are developing preferences and passions in which poetry needs to be a part of.

My Project

With these poetry books, I can model critical thinking and analysis during mini-lessons. Students can read mentor texts that demonstrate vivid use of language and vocabulary. Students will be able to experience a genre that is unlike any other. Poetry has a variety of forms, rhyme schemes, and topics. Students can hear how to play with language and shape words into poems.

Poetry books in my classroom library will leave a lasting impact on my students' literacy lives and reading experience.

The books will continue to support literacy skills as new students enter my class each year.
