My Students

"Poetry makes me feel alive." This is a quote from one of my 3rd graders earlier this year as we studied poetry. I want every student in my class to feel alive through the words of these great poets.

Everyone posts on Donors Choose that their students are the best, but I have to admit that mine are actually THE BEST!

They are an excited, eager, energetic bunch of students who crave learning like a marathoner craves water. They want to know so much, and I want to meet their needs. Our school is a Title I school in South Carolina where over half of the student body is on free and reduced lunch, but my students never let their circumstances get in the way of their learning.

My Project

Earlier this year when we studied poetry, my students hung on ever word that I read to them. They were particularly captivated by Langston Hughes and his poem, "Dreams." We completed an author study of his life, and they checked out books of his poetry from the library. Taking my cues from my students, I am writing this Donors Choose project to request more poetry books for our classroom. I selected some classic authors that I think the students will connect with similar to Langston Hughes. I chose 5 each, of 5 different books, so that students can work in cooperative learning groups to explore the poetry together. Book talk groups are already established with my 3rd graders so these books will be a perfect fit for our class.

I know that there are donors out there right now who love poetry as much as my students.

Help me to open their minds and spirits to the inspiring world of poetry even further. Your generous donation will be long lasting. The impact of this project will go on for years to come.
