Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are an eclectic bunch--with a range of abilities, who may be classified as low-income, but are never poor in potential and drive. They seek knowledge and feel empowered with the few resources we have. We do not have a department budget or the option to turn in a list of supplies every year. In fact, teachers at my school are driven to provide as many resources as they can because our students are truly remarkable.

Some may not come from socially and emotionally safe homes.

Some may not have their basic needs met at home. Some have trauma and emotional disturbances that affect their learning. Some may be reading at college level and just need a space to express themselves.

They need a boost half way through the year, to be motivated, and to feel like they can achieve. I want to prepare them for high school, but want to create an activity that will allow them to deal with their emotions while gaining useful literary skills. Promoting reading and self determination has been helpful, but I'd like to start a poetry club.

They will need journals, poetry books, art supplies to decorate their creations, and ink.

My Project

We have reached the middle of the year, and motivation is a factor among 8th graders, who may begin to develop "senioritis." Poetry is a phenomenal way to engage the adolescent mind that is growing and feeling so many changes at once.

Through words they can express their feelings, frustrations, motivations, goals and angst.

These changes can overwhelm a child and cause their academic work to falter, so why not create an outlet for expression and coping via poetry?

They will need journals, poetry books, art supplies to decorate their creations, and ink. They will learn crucial literary terms and how to apply poetic devices. They will be able to write in their personalized journals, and choose to type and print their best poems to share in the classroom.
