Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a small public school within a large urban school district. My students are as diverse as the members of the communities they come from, but they are united in their thirst for learning and goals to advance via education.

My students are ambitious, bright, and hardworking, and I applaud their continuous efforts to cultivate their learning through discovery and inquiry.

My students are encouraged to work on developing their reading and writing skills independently, but exposing them to collaborative activities allows them to see how language evolves. With the right classroom tools, their academic growth will be incredible, this year and in the future. And they will always feel empowered to use their voice.

My Project

The purpose of my project is to allow the students to use their problem solving and creative skills to produce stories and ideas, using magnetic poetry, in order to understand how fluid language can be.

Whether it is writing a haiku or a sonnet, the magnetic poetry will allow them to see the process authors undergo as they too have the opportunity to create stories.

In my classroom, students are always asked to read texts written by published authors and either conduct a rhetorical analysis or a literary analysis; write an argument or annotate a piece. Often they are reluctant or bewildered about how to proceed because they don't have the right words, yet they are always on their phones tweeting or texting which comes quite naturally to them. The magnetic poetry provides with the words, and their creativity will be their guide.
