This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have been begging me since last year to do a poetry unit. I just began our poetry unit this week and I have never seen them so excited about learning!

The disabilities of my students include speech/language impairments, ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger's, severe emotional disturbance, and more.

All of my students are bright, motivated people who need that extra push to succeed. I am touched and inspired by their ability to face these tremendous obstacles and continue to “dream big." Most of them intend on pursuing a college degree and I am trying to provide them with the tools they need to become successful in a university setting.

My Project

My biggest challenge is finding intellectually stimulating material that is also of high interest to my students. When we started the poetry unit, one of my students introduced me to a compilation of poems by Tupac Shakur. My students love his poetry and music so I decided to incorporate this book into my curriculum. In this book, I was able to find many of the literary elements that we discuss during this unit: imagery, alliteration, simile, metaphor, and more. Unfortunately, I only have one copy and have been relying on photocopies. A class set of "The Rose That Grew From Concrete" by Tupac Shakur would be a great asset to my classroom.
