My Students

My students are growing up in a densely populated urban community plagued by poverty, food insecurity, violence, and lack of affordable housing. These adult societal ills are daunting for our youth to understand and makes survival a daily struggle. To compound their hardships, my students are surviving a pandemic during their most formative "middle-years". They have endured a year of social isolation and most have never met their classmates nor set foot in their middle school classrooms. The pandemic has caused a threat of social and emotional atrophy, students' lack of relational experiences is stunting self-expression, threatening mental health, and literally muting many of the youth's voices and ability to call for help. My students' drastic needs will require creative and engaging instruction like this project proposes to rectify.

My Project

These materials will provide for a unit of self-exploration and search for VOICE through poetry grounded in stories of struggle and racial equity and empowerment.

As we return to classrooms where kids are separated by distance and possibly plexiglass partitions, these books will bond and build a common mind for our youth.

They will allow students to grow their own self-expression through poetry and instill a love of language that has been stunted by isolation and distance learning. These books will bring teens closer and help them process the emotional trauma of the pandemic.
