Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Here at Port Richmond High School, I have the privilege of working with some of the best students in New York City. What I love most is being able to witness each student reach his/her own potential.

Sometimes it's over the course of a school year, sometimes it takes a little longer, but when students enter my class, no matter what struggles may stand in their way, they will see that through reading, writing, speaking and listening, anything is possible.

I work with many amazing students who come from a variety of backgrounds, interests, talents, challenges and more. Throughout the course of the year, I love watching each student discover more about their identity as they interact with different texts, creative writing, and each other via discussions and activities.

My Project

Poetry is the gateway to self-discovery! Lately, more and more of my students have been exploring our libraries for new books and have been requesting poetry like Amanda Lovelace's The Princess Saves Herself in this One. What's been so amazing is that once they are done soaking up the books I have, they can't wait to absorb more. BUT, my library and the school's library is limited on contemporary poetry, which is what they connect to the most.

In my upcoming unit, students will be exploring their own personal truths as they read and write different styles of poetry.

They will be exposed to classical poets such as Langston Hughes, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost and others but I would also love to expose my students to as many different contemporary poets as possible so they are able make connections between the universal issues people experience across different time periods.
