My Students

Utah has the highest class sizes and lowest per student spending in the nation. Some of my SDJH students think being jaded, cynical, and apathetic is cool. Some of my students are hanging onto ideals and optimism. All of my students are trying to figure out who they are, how to handle school and peers, navigate the uncertainties and frustration of the continuing pandemic, and how to relate to a changing world and diverse people in it.

My students want proof that writing is relevant, and that good writing in within their potential.

They want to be entertained at the same time they master engaging challenges (like in video games)! Many of them don't believe that reading can deliver that kind of enjoyment, or that they can achieve reading or writing mastery.

My Project

Poetry can feel too unrelatable, narrow, and opaque to eighth graders. If they don't enjoy reading it, or think it's only something dead people did, they won't feel empowered to write it either.

These books will bring poetry from a variety of voices with high artistic quality to each student in my classroom.

These compilations of poetry by classic authors will help my students learn poetry from "the greats" in literature circles, including from two important diverse masters. The full class set of contemporary poetry helps make poetry relatable to teenagers, keeps the content school appropriate, and would allow me to have each student in the class refer to their own book without having to share.
