My Students

Creating work for a real life purpose is one of the great challenges of teaching. Our poetry cafe has been one of the ways we have been able to inspire students to press forward with effort and purpose. In the past, we have had make shift cafes, but this year we will blow it out of the water!

We teach in an integrated classroom that incorporates children with special needs and their general education peers.

Providing all of our students with rich and rewarding ways to share their work is part of our mission every year. Our students with special needs benefit especially from having a concrete reward after all of their hard work.

My Project

We will use the supplies to create a fully functional poetry cafe. The flowers and tablecloths will provide ambiance, and the microphone will allow even the shyest students to be celebrated. Students will serve parents and other visitors donated baked goods and coffee, while our guests listen to the poetry or other published work of the students. The pens will allow patrons to leave our poets amazing reviews. Last year, we held our first cafe, and it was a tremendous success. We are looking forward to continuing this tradition for many years to come!
