Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Jazz is a powerful form of creative expression that inspires imagination and storytelling. This project aims to teach my second graders about the structure and elements of poetry by incorporating the rhythm and energy of jazz music. After all, poetry, like jazz, is meant to be performed!

This project will introduce them to the world of jazz through curated playlists featuring legends like Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday, played on a Bluetooth speaker while they note rhythmic patterns and review sound energy vocabulary such as volume and pitch.

Since many of my students are English language learners who are new to the country, immersive experiences are most valuable in teaching them content vocabulary and helping to retain new concepts.

This jazz experience will take a different approach than other projects you may have seen because they will be listening to jazz music and learning about it while engaged in a plethora of multidisciplinary learning - writing poetry on chart paper about earth science concepts (the globe and flashlights I've requested are to enhance their understanding of why seasons change by mimicing the rotation and revolution of our planet), for example.
