Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Project Overview:

In this project, students will explore The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo through the lens of empowerment, identity, and self-expression.

Students will engage in reading, discussion, and poetry writing exercises to connect personally with the novel's themes. The ultimate goal is for students to create a personal poetry portfolio, showcasing their growth as both readers and writers while understanding the transformative power of words in defining and expressing one’s identity.

Learning Objectives:

Reading Comprehension: Deepen understanding of The Poet X by analyzing themes of family, religion, identity, and the challenges of growing up.

Poetry Writing: Develop original poems inspired by themes in the novel and personal experiences.

Critical Thinking: Explore how the form of free verse poetry reflects and enhances the novel's themes.

Public Speaking: Perform a selection of their poems, learning to express emotion and meaning through voice and body.

Empathy and Reflection: Engage in discussions that encourage empathy, perspective-taking, and self-reflection.

Project Phases & Activities:

Phase 1: Introduction & Reading (1 week

Activity: Students will select one poem from their portfolio to perform in front of the class. This performance will include both vocal delivery and physical presentation (using hand gestures, facial expressions, etc.).

Discussion: After each performance, classmates will discuss the emotional impact of the poem and how it was conveyed through delivery.

Phase 5: Final Reflection and Project Presentation (1 week)

This project will help students connect with The Poet X on a personal level, exploring their own identities through the power of poetry. By combining reading, writing, and performance, students will gain a deeper understanding of both the novel and the therapeutic nature of creative expression. The ultimate goal is for students to feel empowered by their words and confident in their ability to share their stories with the world.
