Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our class is a New York City Public School Kindergarten classroom located in East Harlem.

Our classroom is a part of the ASD Nest Program serving students with Autism along side their typically developing peers Our school is a Title 1 school serving a high percentage of income of low income families along with English language learners, and students with disabilities.

A big part of our classroom is the social curriculum that focuses on teaching individuals with autism the "hidden curriculum" of the social world.

When you enter our classroom you will see: smiles, laughter, fun, engagement, technology, risk taking, mistake making, and most important students learning how to be life long learners. Thank you for taking the time to learn about our classroom and helping us to achieve our goals!

My Project

We want to prepare our students for the technologically advanced world that we live in by giving them a platform to share information that they learn.

Many educators are starting to see how podcasting can help hone students’ vocabulary, writing, editing, public speaking, and presentation skills.

Along with acquiring these skills our students with Autism will have the ability to interact and practice many of the social and communication skills that they lack.

One of the most interesting and valuable uses of Podcasting in Education is the concept of student created content. In our classroom we strive for students to take control of their learning through inquiry learning projects. With these materials we can highly motivate and engage our students in learning both academic and social skills.

What we need:

An omnidirectional microphone: this will be used for recording the podcast. What is so special about this is that more than one person can speak and still be heard clearly. It will allow the students the ability to record interviews with more than one student and even whole class conversations.

Digital Voice Recorder: having this equipment will give the students the ability to record podcasts on the go. They can take it on trips, the playground, and even to their own homes to interview families. This would enhance our ability to allow students to podcast about what they want to anywhere they want to!

Video Stand: this will be used for the digital voice recorder to have a place to store during interviews.

We plan to share these podcasts on a classroom blog with our school and families. This will also help bridge the gap between home and school and allow for parents to hear about what their children are working on first hand!
