This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Approximately 40 percent of high school graduates lack the literacy skills employers seek. This is why it is imperative that we provide our middle school students with the reading supports that they need to be successful in middle school, high school and college!
At a Title 1 school in Washington DC, I teach a small group of 15 wonderful 6th grade students in my reading intervention class.
They are students with mild to moderate gaps in decoding and spelling proficiency but without a significant language learning disability. They are students with gaps in their decoding and spelling and performing below grade level (16- 50th percentile).
My Project
With the materials that I am requesting, we will finally have pocket charts and magnetic boards which we need to hold and manipulate our magnetic sound cards and word cards. These cards are important in my intervention program because these sound cards are used to drill sounds and directly teach word structure by manipulating word parts.
My students are not just learning reading and spelling basics, they are being provided the foundational skills that are necessary in today’s economy.
By generously sharing the needed resources, you are supporting a highly explicit, multisensory decoding and spelling program for students in 6th grade who require explicit decoding and spelling instruction due to word deficits.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
