My Students

Science should be fun and science should be challenging. Science must be taught in such a way that students from a lifelong love of the subject matter, and, hopefully, pursue a career in the science field. I teach seventh-grade science at a magnet middle school in a downtown urban area. I have 103 diverse learners who are taught using a hands-on, inquiry-based science curriculum.

My students are diverse.

Our school has many nationalities represented. My students are high achieving and from various different economic backgrounds. Our school is considered a school of need according to the number of students who qualify financially for free lunch programs.

Some students come to school hungry and are not truly concerned with what we have to teach them because they are overwhelmed by the thoughts of where their next meal may come from. Other students question if we actually have something to teach them that will truly make a difference in their lives. Still, others wonder if learning can truly be fun.

My Project

We have Chromebooks in the classroom and they are a great resource for my students. However, we are not provided with headphones for the students and I am requesting a class set of headphones. These headphones are needed to maximize Chromebook use. For example, students watch videos to supplement their learning and can listen to information sent to them by me or on websites. This is especially helpful for my students that read below grade level, which includes more than half of my students. As middle school students, this type of learning is crucial to comprehension.

My students are excited to learn using videos whenever we are able to.

Also, if they are able to listen to information on-line, they are able to be independent learners, which builds confidence. I do not have any headphones in my classroom right now. While a few students have been able to bring in their own headphones, most of my students cannot afford to bring their own.

The students in my class have not had the opportunity to have a lot of experiences outside of their own neighborhood. The Chromebook is a great tool to help them learn about the world, but without the sound the experience is just not the same. Headphones will allow them to access sound without disturbing one another. These headphones will be cared for so that we may use them in future years. I am also requesting calendars in order to plan and organize interactive lessons.
