My Students

My first graders live in a diverse neighborhood consisting of hard working people and unfortunately, many bad influences. Their parents often work more than one job to make ends meet. Many parents are English language learners themselves and cannot always help the students with their homework. They are lucky to attend a school that may be poor but has an administration with bold ambitions for them.

Math is the great equalizer...English language learners can feel successful in math sooner than any other subject!

My Project

My class includes a mixture of English language learners and other first graders. One thing that unites the class is math. You do not have to be able to read or speak the language to count.

Since all the students work together or math games, this is one of the best ways for students to learn English.

These math games also give the children a sense of accomplishment that may be missing when learning to read and write.

After a math concept is taught, students go off in small groups to play math games that reinforce the skills they have learned. What a great way to learn!
