Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My name is Ms. Harkins, and I am a 15 year veteran teacher in Baltimore City Public Schools. In my 5th grade math class, I work with about 100 fantastic and talented students who work hard and are striving to prepare for middle school mathematics and pre-algebra. My incredible school is located in southwest Baltimore, and we work hard to provide students and families with the tools they need to be successful here at school and beyond the neighborhood and zip code. We are a Title I school, and about 85% of students are living in poverty. About 55% of our students are from immigrant families.

Our school is a community school and is a hub of activity in the neighborhood.

We have an active food pantry, STEAM center and partnerships that sustain our population. I have been a proud member of this school community for six years and have been honored to be a part of the hardworking staff that goes above and beyond to support our deserving and talented students.

My Project

We have dynamic and enthusiastic students who come in each year eager to learn and grow and be engaged in their learning environment. However, students do not always have the resources and materials they need to help them be successful in their classrooms. With this project, I hope to have materials available for my students to use so that they can come to school and be ready to learn and engage with content, without fear of not having what they need.

The notebooks will serve as an interactive journal for learning during math class.

Clipboards allow us to learn outside away from our desks and provide us an opportunity to collaborate in flexible seating. The folders and pencils help us to stay organized and focused on learning!
