I am a teacher in an impoverished section of Queens, NY. My students in Grades 1,2 and 3 need to see a clock in each of their classrooms that is not digital, in order for them to become keepers of time! I am trying to instill in the students that being able to tell time is a skill that they will continue to have when they are senior citizens. Many of the teachers in our school have small digital clocks for the students to use to record the time they leave the room and the time that they return. This is a great way to keep records, but the children are not actually learning how to tell time. We do have the famous Judy clocks that have helped us to teach the children about telling time, but a functioning clock that has a second hand on it would be ideal. We would be able to teach, check the learning, and reinforce how to tell time every day. By having telling-time drills which are similar in nature to a spelling bee, the teachers could reinforce the actual time to the students at many intervals during the day. If each classroom involved in this project over the next school year has a wall clock to use, I think that in the next three years when those first graders become fourth graders, they will be the keepers of time for sure. I find that repetition is the key to building this skill of telling time. Although the digital clock serves a purpose, a wall clock with a second hand will encourage our students to keep time forever. I am asking to be considered for 15 wall clocks for these classrooms to use in the upcoming school year. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then having a wall clock would have to be worth so much more to these students.
