Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a second grade class in a bilingual special education setting in a high-need community school in New York.

My students are constantly yelling out "Teacher! How do you spell....?" or "I don't know how to spell..." I try to have them sound things out or look around the classroom, but they want an immediate answer on how to spell words correctly. As much as I like their insistence on spelling things correctly, I find that while they wait for me to help them, they are wasting too much of their writing block time. They also constantly use the same descriptors over and over again. As English Language Learners, I want them to have a more extensive vocabulary - not everything is "good" or "nice". Having these dictionaries and the reference overheads, I could teach them the process of looking up words and finding synonyms. The Spanish-English dictionary I requested because at times, a student will ask for a word in Spanish and it would be great if they could find the English equivalent instead of always being told. I know it is easy to just key it into the computer, but I believe students need to learn to research outside of computers as well.

It would be great if each student could have a personal dictionary at their desks that they could whip out and refer to so they could spell and find new words. This would help them learn a brand new skill - researching, and help to reinforce their alphabetical knowledge. Also, (and to me more importantly), it will give them a sense of autonomy. They will no longer have to wait for help in getting their words, they can look them up themselves! The reference skills overhead kit will help me teach them how to find information in the classroom and beyond. These children will likely be in the third grade with me next year so I'd like to start teaching them research skills now so they'll be prepared.

Your generous donation will help build the students' writing skills, increase their self-esteem, and give us some more efficient class time that will no longer be bogged down by something as trivial as spelling. They may even learn new words as a result. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
