My Students

There are 26 letters in the alphabet. Each letter has an upper case visual model and a lower case. Add this to letters that make a variety of sounds and then try to remember the letter name. Whew, that's a lot of information to take in!

Our school is located in the biggest, oldest, and poorest public housing development in our city.

Many students have never attended any sort of early learning center prior to stepping in to our class. Listening to grown ups read, understanding that signs/words have meaning, and beginning to acquire skills that set us up to be good readers are often things that our students first learn when they come to school. In our pre-k class, we are an enthusiastic and excited group of young learners. Our class is blended, meaning that half of our students have an impairment in one of more areas of development. But regardless of ability, we're all working on getting ready to go to Kindergarten. And one of the most important things we hear from our Kindergarten teachers is that our students need to move up knowing as many letters as possible.

My Project

The cabinet and 25 bins in this project will allow us to sort and store materials for each letter of the alphabet. (It's OK! Our great friends y and z have committed to sharing space so that all 26 letters will fit in the cabinet.) This means that we can store items and materials in a more accessible manner for students during center time but also for teachers when we need to have tactile items at arm's reach for individual learning opportunities. Students will have the opportunity to explore materials in a hands-on way as we introduce them to new letters of the alphabet. They will be able to take part in sorting the materials by letter sounds. And they will have the opportunity to begin discriminating between letters when they see symbols that may look similar. The corner shelf will help our students access their letter notebooks. When they think of a new word or drawing to add to their books, they will be able to do so more independently and quickly with accessible storage. My students need a cubby cabinet with bins and corner shelf to provide storage for the materials we use to help us learn our letters!

Letters are one of the most important things you will ever learn.

Letters open the door to reading. And reading opens doors to the world. Help our class have more hands-on opportunities to find our letters and to start using them to become great readers!
