This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What would our world be like without Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, and Salvador Dali?! Wouldn't it be rewarding to be a part of supporting our students in leaving their mark on the world!?

Our students are from a high needs public elementary school in NYC.

They are an integral part of our community, which is in one of the most vivacious neighborhoods in NYC. Many students are bilingual and appreciate art because it's a universal language.

My Project

Last year my students drew large amazing self-portraits expressing their unique qualities by using a real photograph of them as a reference. I was really impressed with the results! The next step was to use watercolors to paint them. Since watercolor paper is expensive they used regular drawing paper, which didn't hold up with the paint and their beautiful drawings ended up ripping. They were left with holes in their self-portraits. It was really disappointing for them and discouraging because they spend a lot of time and were proud of their drawings. I promised them this wouldn't happen again. I would feel so grateful and really appreciate a donation of watercolor paper and watercolor pencils!!! Our students will also appreciate that other people think about them, are aware of their needs and support their artistic expression.

This project isn't just about a painting.

Self-portraits are a great opportunity for self discovery and expression. They celebrate our differences, similarities, and also help us explore our individuality. I always tell my students that there are billions of people in this world and no one is like you. Use your self-portrait to express your unique qualities and how these qualities leave an impact on everyone else.
