I am a music teacher in a New York City public school that serves middle and high school aged students who face many and varied challenges including learning disabilities, autism, severe language delays, severe physical handicaps and/or behavioral disorders. Because of their special needs it's difficult to take the students to performances - so we bring the performances to them. Several of the performing groups are middle and high school students from the general education population. Many of our students indicated the desire to also participate in a performing group - so this year for the first time we initiated a chorus and a percussion band. Because real drums are expensive we have been using buckets and tubs purchased from places such as Home Depot. We have also used a pair of donated timpani. We have help three very successful performances - including one "on the road." As a result more students wanted to join - we therefore need more drums, mallets, etc. If you could help more students realize their dream of performing in a band - just like their peers in general education - it would mean so much. Thank you for whatever help you can give.
