Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This school year, I began to teach in a Pre-K special education classroom for children with autism at a public school in the Bronx. I was drawn to this school because, despite the poverty and crime rate, the principal, staff, and students are amazing, and I truly believe I was meant to teach here.

Autism prevalence has increased 317% since 2000 and 1 in 36 kids are now identified with autism: that is 241% higher than the baseline statistics in 2000.

The NYC Department of Education started a new program recently to help students with special needs get more access and have more options. Currently, in the DOE, approximately 10,000 students are not in specialized programs, despite the need.

My classroom consists of 2 to 4 -year- old nonverbal students with autism. To create the most beneficial class, we need a substantial amount of sensory and other autism specific items. I am a new teacher in the DOE, but I do realize that I will most likely not have the financial support from the various families of the children I teach nor can I rely on funding from the administration. I want to provide the best possible education and learning opportunities for my students.

I am reaching out to ask for your help in achieving my fundraising goal. Your generosity can make a significant impact on the lives of my students. It will help me to provide them with the best possible education and prepare them for a bright future.
