Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Believe in Yourself." This is one of the three rules posted in our reading lab. Most of the kids we service cannot read at all. It can be very difficult for a young child to persevere in the face of failure. When they want to slump down or tune out, we tell them "Believe in yourself!" and it works!

100% of our students live below the federal poverty line.

80% read below grade level, and most speak a language other than English at home. Our reading lab services the lowest readers out of this population. Our kids are great kids and they are smart kids, but socio-economic, social, and language factors have combined to cause many of them to be woefully unprepared to be able to learn to read successfully in a traditional classroom setting of 25+ students.

My Project

We use a program called Reach for Phonics, and we have been having great success increasing achievement by using this program in a lab setting. 98% of the kids attending this semester are showing growth in reading. Our program came with plastic magnetic letters that the kids can use to build and "take apart" words they are learning to read. We think this activity would be enhanced by providing the students with magnetic lap boards, so they can move and see the letters more easily. Also, we can use dry erase markers to have them write the words as well.

Our program is making a difference in the lives of the students we serve.

Their futures depend upon them learning to read. Using the lapboards will just give us another tool in our arsenal of helping them to "crack the code" of phonics to become fluent readers.
