Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At my Title I school, students come from a variety of backgrounds. They frequently tell me that they enjoy science class the most, because they are exposed to seeing, feeling, and creating new things. Each school year, I have the pleasure of teaching two classes of honors 8th grade students who are taking the Regents Earth Science course at an accelerated time, before they step foot into high school. This group of students is extremely self-motivated, driven, and interested in the sciences. Many of these students attend science specialized high schools after graduation.

My Project

My ambitious 8th grade students are taking a high school level earth science course while still in middle school. Unfortunately, the rocks and minerals samples that I have been able to acquire are small, unclear samples that my students have expressed difficulty working with (especially when determining the hardness of the mineral). Quality rocks and minerals samples are expensive and are not part of my school's budget. I would love for my students to gain more exposure working with samples that will prepare for them for the practical portion of the exam and take these high-achieving future scientists on the road to success! Thank you in advance for your generosity!!
