Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with 18 wonderful and inquisitive pre-kindergarten students in a very diverse school in Brooklyn, New York. We have children from many different cultures in our class and children with many special abilities.

Our Pre-K students love to learn new things daily!

For many of these children, it is their first year in school. They are learning about themselves, others, school rules, routines, and many new concepts in various subjects. They have many opportunities to explore what kind of learners they are and learn concepts in many different ways!

My Project

As a student of color growing up in New York City, I distinctly remember never seeing myself represented in my learning environment. It always made feel confused and sometimes sad, it left me wondering who I am and if people respected who I was born as. I don't want any of my students ever feeling this way.

Times have changed but not enough!

As educators, we must understand the needs of every single student regardless of ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or ability and meet the needs of the whole child. We must purposefully create a safe space that encourages their self-esteem and their learning about others whom we share our lives with on this planet. We must encourage a celebration of diversity and empathy for those who may need our help in tough times. These are tough times for many children and they need to know they are loved, respected, admired, and they can do anything they set their mind to.

In order to accomplish these goals, my students need various materials that represent themselves and others. They need blank books and posters to teach all of us about themselves. Learning about yourself and loving yourself is the first step to great self-esteem. They need art materials such as multicultural paper and crayons to express themselves. They need a globe to learn about the world on a larger basis. They need puzzles, toys, and books that look like them, tell their story, and will help them feel represented in their learning environment. The books will help all students not only understand themselves and their feelings but will also help them understand and appreciate others.

We would greatly appreciate any help you can give to make our classroom diverse and inclusive. Thank you!
