My Students

"Tell me and I'll forget. Show me, and I may not remember. Involve me, and I'll understand." My students love to be involved, this projector will allow them to actually come up and show their answers on a screen for the whole class to see. The pride they feel in their work is obvious in their smiles.

My students are 1st graders in a high poverty, inner city primary school.

100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch. We give students coats to keep them warm, pencils to do their homework with, and backpacks to carry their schoolwork home in. 99% of the time my students come to school happy, smiling, and eager to learn. They are kind, caring, and curious, and always ready to lend a helping hand to one another. The other 1% of the time though I hear stories about gunshots in the night, homelessness, death, and sadly abuse. I comfort, console, counsel, cheer, and most importantly...listen without judging. In 6 short years they have already endured a lifetime of heartache. Despite all of this they constantly want to learn. They ask many, many questions and soak up the answers like sponges. They understand at an early age that education is a way out for them. Our district asks the students to make a promise to dream big and work hard and keep that promise until they graduate. Help!

My Project

The projector I currently have is broken, and cannot be repaired. With a new projector, my students will be able to show the whole class what they can do! I use the projector in my self contained classroom for reading, math, spelling, science, and social studies. Students can come up and the circle the verb in a sentence, use actual coins to show 38 cents, take a practice spelling test, describe the life cycle of an apple tree, and take a tour of the redwood forest! All from the comfort of Room 203. Not only does this projector show their individual work on a screen in front of the class, I can also connect the projector to my computer. This allows access to educational websites such as The Smithsonian Institution for social studies and Energy Kids for science. The whole class can view and interact with these websites because sadly we have no computer lab at our school.

The students in my class are typical 1st graders.

They question everything and are so eager to learn, especially when learning is so much fun. This Epson projector is like the old-fashioned overheads, but much more student friendly, allowing the students to be 100% involved in their learning. By using the projector, students can show their thinking, and exhibit their solutions to a problem. When students teach students, learning increases exponentially.
