Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help me to bring back some of the creative exploration to Kindergarten! I teach in a rural area in northern New Mexico. Most of the students that attend my school are Hispanic, Mexican and Native American. Our school district is in the center of 3 major Native American Pueblos and about 80% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch which means that they come from very low income families.

Our school puts a lot of focus on Language Arts and Math, and the students are not given a chance to explore Science and to find a love of Science. I do not have the materials to help me teach kindergarten Science, and I am struggling to raise money being that most of my students have families that cannot afford to give a little extra for materials. I have noticed that my students are very, very interested in hands-on science activities, and I want to give them more. I want them to be able to use a microscope and really look at the details of what they are interested in. I want to give them a chance to use magnets and to explore science concepts with fun, interactive materials.

If I could purchase basic science equipment and materials, I could build a foundation of science in my classroom and plant the seed of learning in my class. I want them to explore and discover. I want to see the light in their eyes as they learn through science. I would like to see them become curious and inquire about the world they live in and ask questions that will continue their love of science through the elementary years and beyond.

Please help my kindergarten students by giving us tools that will benefit not only my current kindergarten students but the upcoming kindergarten students for years to come. I can't do it on my own. I need your help. Let me show you a child's face shine with pride when he/she discovers one of the worlds many science wonders!
