My Students

I am an elementary Life Skills teacher in a high poverty school. All of my students receive free lunch. We currently have three Life Skills classes in our building. There are over 40 students with a wide range of physical and developmental disabilities including Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, sensory or visual impairment, and Autism. Our students require all academics to be modified, and they access the curriculum through a variety of methods.

We have a big goal this year .

. . to create a multi-sensory learning center for ALL the classes to use. This therapeutic room will allow children who are non-ambulatory to get out of their wheelchairs and explore materials safely. Students with limited vision will be able to access the light stimulation they require. Cause and effect activities will also be readily available for students working on those skills. Students with behavioral challenges can also use this room as a calming environment or for reinforcement.

My Project

There is definitely a connection between classroom design and learning outcomes. An environment that provides relevant content, clear learning goals and feedback, strategies to help students succeed, and opportunities to build social skills are all important factors affecting student learning and this is why it is so important that my students have sturdy and well-made furniture in their classroom.

The quality of furniture impacts student learning and safety!

Teachers are trained to educate students of varying capabilities using different techniques to convey a message/idea, and while educators understand that each student has unique cognitive needs, the fact that all students have unique physical needs sometimes gets overlooked. My classroom will benefit from a variety of seating options as well as different sized/shaped work stations. Flexible, movement-based classrooms are the future!
