Please Help a Child Who Cannot Move or Speak..... to Learn.

My students need access to copy paper, velcro and laminating rolls to create and preserve teacher and/or student made individual books and lessons that incorporate photos and special communication symbols. We also need batteries to keep their augmentative communication devices functioning properly.

I teach in a New York public school that services students who face the challenges of severe physical disabilities, medical fragility, autism, severe intellectual delays, speech/language delays, hearing impairments, visual impairments, emotional challenges and/or learning disabilities.

Because the needs of our students are so unique we have to develop our own teaching materials. Because so many of our students cannot speak verbally or are "prisoners of their bodies" we have to use augmentative communication systems that will allow them to fully participate in a lesson.

As a music teacher, I use books that were created by the classroom teachers in our school and adapt them musically - this serves as a wonderful carry-over and reinforcement. As a music teacher I create (many times with student assistance and input) my own books that incorporate the same Mayor/Johnson speech symbols that are used in the classrooms. As a music teacher I also use the augmentative communication devices to program melodic lines, words to a song, a rhythmic pattern or individual musical tones, thus enabling the student to play along with us - it no longer matters if he or she cannot speak or move - all he or she has to do is strike the device. Thanks to the stock market downturns and severe budget cuts it is difficult for us to obtain even the basic supplies that we need. Without paper we cannot print our books or symbols. Without Velcro we cannot attach them to their appropriate places. Without laminating rolls the books would be ruined from constant use. Without batteries our augmentative devices will not work.

With your help we will be able to replace these sorely needed supplies. Thank you for whatever you can do.
