I am a music teacher in a New York City public school that serves middle and high school aged students who face many and varied challenges including autism, severe physical handicaps, severe language delays, learning disabilities and/or behavioral disorders. Because many of these students are unable to verbalize what they need, want or feel they become understandably frustrated and upset. Our school uses Mayor Johnson picture symbols in an organized system that helps the student communicate even if he cannot speak. By using these symbols the student can request a specific song, select a beat or melodic line (thereby helping to compose a piece)or answer a question. By placing the appropriate symbol on an augmentative communication device the physically handicapped or nonverbal student has been able to join our chorus and band - and participate fully. Materials such as lamination film, Velcro and copy paper are needed on a continuing basis to create and protect more symbols. Batteries are also needed to continue to "feed" the augmentative devices. The cost of supplies from Quill Corporation is $454.09 plus shipping and fulfillment. Thank you for whatever help you can give.
