This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I would like to offer my students the chance for calm and therapeutic play with their peers each morning, so that they can start their day in a happy and positive way. Research shows that play helps to strengthen relationships and feelings of safety, and teaches children valuable skills such as turn-taking, patience, perseverance, and collaboration. These are all things that students also need to be successful learners in the classroom and compassionate citizens in their community.

Through play, my students will learn to see the world through the eyes of their classmates as they interact with each other, share materials, work through conflicts, and work together.

Playtime is where children first learn that it’s not “all about them”- that other people have unique wants, needs, values, and interests. These prosocial skills and attitudes are underdeveloped in many children as we come out of the pandemic, as many of them missed formative preschool and kindergarten play experiences. Opportunities to learn and practice these prosocial skills are needed to alleviate suffering in our school community. I expect to see this intentional playtime result in students behaving more positively and compassionately towards their peers. I will consider this project successful if I hear fewer complaints of students leaving each other out, name calling, and arguing over materials or ideas. If problems arise, I will use our morning meeting and social emotional learning time to explicitly teach the desired behaviors, but I am confident that many of these things will develop naturally through play.

I have chosen several types of hands-on engineering materials that will be cognitively engaging for students, facilitate social interactions, and spark creativity. Students will have a choice of these materials for the first fifteen minutes of each day, and will move into academic time with calm minds and smiling faces.
