My Students

Preschoolers want to play! It's plain and simple. However, for preschools with Autism Spectrum Disorder, playing may take some practice.

Although my students are very active and friendly, many of them have trouble engaging with their peers to work on social and play skills.

This is a symptom seen in many children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Individuals with autism have to learn the social and play skills that come much more naturally to their typically developing peers.

My Project

One of the main goals in my classroom is to help my students learn proper social and play skills. Most of these skills are taught through dramatic play. Dramatic play often involves students taking on a role and acting it out. While acting out these roles, students can develop social skills through pretend or make-believe scenarios, communication with peers, and being engaged in an activity for extended amounts of time. My students need dramatic play toys such as dolls and furniture for a doll house and kitchen dish and utensil sets with pretend food. The doll house furniture, dolls, and motor vehicles will allow my students to act out everyday scenarios that they experience at home. They will also encourage them to socialize with their peers through the dolls. The kitchen food and materials will help my students act out functional routines that will be used throughout life, such as making meals and helping prepare the food. They will also have the opportunity to act out community scenarios such grocery shopping or eating at a restaurant.

Learning how to play, especially with peers, is an important skill that all children need to develop.

Acquiring these skills through dramatic play is extremely beneficial because it focuses on all developmental areas. Students are required to engage with their classmates building social/emotional skills, think about scenarios and social situations to then act out developing cognitive and physical skills, and communicate with one another to practice language skills.
