Playing Recorders: A Rite of Passage!

My students need a stronger music education. I would like to teach the 5th graders to play a recorder and read music so they are ready for middle school opportunities.

My Students

TOOT, TOOT, TOOT! I can almost hear the beautiful sounds of 5th graders playing recorders. I would like to teach them to play an instrument and read music so that they can love and appreciate music for a lifetime. I hope they choose to continue with music as they move onto middle school.

Our school is a Title 1 school in a rural setting.

The parents are very supportive of every musical event, but many of them cannot afford extras. We have had a large turnover of music teachers for various reasons. This is my first year and I can see how lacking our 5th graders' music education is compared to the school where I student taught. It makes me sad that they have not had the same opportunities. I would like my students to receive a private school music education even though this is Title 1 school with limited resources. The students at this school (K-5) are wonderful. We have approximately 350 students very little discipline problems. They are sweet and very appreciative. They love music class and we always have a good time learning. For our Holiday Concert we had over 1000 parents attend, which proves that they want their children involved in music. If we can get them, my plan is to have a Spring Concert where the 5th graders will perform on their recorders.

My Project

Einstein said that if he wasn't a physicist he would have been a musician. He understood that music is more than entertainment. It can soothe the soul, create memories, relieve stress and be used in therapy. I want our students to understand that music will be in their lives every day -- so why not learn more about it? The 5th graders are at the point of asking "why do I need to learn this?" I want to make sure they can "connect the dots", so to speak, where music education is concerned. Do you need to know that a quarter note gets one beat to be successful in life? No, not unless you're playing a recorder and you don't hold the note long enough! All of a sudden the song is a gobblety-gook of sound! So in addition to giving our students a sense of accomplishment in learning to play an instrument and read music, your contribution toward our recorders will prove to sixty students that a quarter note really does get one beat. And, oh, how beautiful the song can sound!

Our students will have doors opened for them that they wouldn't have otherwise by being involved in music.

They can take chorus or band in middle school, then carry that through high school and college. Thank you for contributing . . . it will make the world of difference.
