My Students

If a group of students was polled about their favorite subject in school, very few would pick Math. Worksheets of Math problems become overwhelming and meaningless to students, causing them to not practice their skills in a meaningful manner.

I have a wide variety of students in my classroom, ranging from Gifted and Talented to English Language Learners to those with special needs.

I teach at a Title 1 elementary school in a small, South Texas town. Most of the students on my campus are on free and reduced lunch. We also have several foster children, as well as children adopted out of the foster care system. My students do not have a means of review and practice afforded them other than those that I provide in my classroom.

My Project

These resources would allow me to provide my students with a fun and engaging way to practice their skills. I am asking for three different sets of games. The first is a Curriculum Mastery 4th Grade set, this will cover all of the material that my students covered in fourth grade. I would be able to begin practicing all of the math skills from the beginning of the year instead of waiting until I teach the skills. This would make teaching the skill and adding on to it much easier because it will be fresh on their minds. I have also requested the 5th Grade Set so that as I teach the skill I can add the 5th grade level questions, allowing them to practice what we have just learned in class, in addition to the information from the previous year. I am also asking for another set of 5th grade level games that would cover every skill that I teach in a year. This additional set will help me to provide a variety of games to practice with.

My students must pass the state test at the end of the year in order to move on to the sixth grade.

That pressure alone is enough that I have often seen students shut down, causing them to achieve poorly. Students who have been discouraged do not retain any information that has been presented. I as a teacher must be able to provide a positive and constantly engaging environment in order to provide my students with what they need to achieve highly.
