My Students

Do you remember when Kindergarten was all about playtime and socializing? Our little ones are under so much pressure to learn nowadays that we have to give them lots of time to play and explore while STILL gaining skills!

I teach a class of 23 gifted and talented 5 and 6-year old children.

They are bright and creative and stubborn and outspoken and wonderful! They are voracious learners -- they love to read and write and learn new skills and strategies each day. They come in every day with stories to tell me and questions to ask about their work and their world. My school is in a beautiful neighborhood that is constantly growing. We have a population of "old-school" New York people who have lived there forever (some parents even attended our school when they were younger. We have a growing population of immigrant/English language learners who are making our school more culturally diverse! My class specifically has a very large Russian population.

My Project

I am requesting more "learning through play" activities for my children. Every day, we do word study in small, differentiated groups. The children are either doing a lesson with me, or off with their partners and groups doing different word activities. It would be great if I could add some word games to their repertoire to change up the routine a little bit. My children will be learning spelling and grammar while playing games! We also have "Friday Free Choice" time every Friday afternoon. While I have lots of fun things for them to do during that time, we have "dried out" our playdough supply and would love to have some more!
