Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are kind and caring children who enter the classroom with a range of strengths and needs. In my South Bronx public elementary school, we are a community of diverse learners.

The school welcomes students who are children of immigrant families, students who are living in high poverty, and students who are learning English as a new language.

Despite those challenges, they come together to form a strong community of learners and friends.

In my ICT kindergarten classroom, my students are excited, energetic, and motivated to learn. They love reading and making art. They love drawing and writing stories about their lives. They love playing and exploring what it means to be a good friend. They are limitless in their aspirations and potential.

My Project

My students enter kindergarten with many hopes and dreams, but most of all, they want to make friends! Open-ended play with materials like LEGOs, Magna-Tiles and farm animals, allows children to learn and engage with each other through fun, playful experiences that help build lasting relationships.

Play is fun, but it is also educational.

When children play together they are learning social skills like turn taking, sharing, and how to communicate effectively. These are especially important skills for the students in my class who have special learning needs and/or English language learners. Through play, they are learning what it means to be a good friend, how to express their feelings and wants with others, and how to empathize with others. For my students, play provides opportunities for collaborative problem solving, critical thinking and safe exploration of big concepts from the world around them.

LEGOs, Magna-Tiles, and farm animals are the perfect open-ended materials for my students, because they can be used to create whatever their imaginations hold.
