My Students

Play is often overlooked in a first grade classroom but I believe that play should be used as vehicle for learning. To quote Mr. Rogers, "Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood."

I teach first grade, at a small school, in a remote part of Brooklyn.

Most of our students live in a nearby housing project. Our school has created an environment where children are exposed to a robust curriculum that is strongly enhanced by the arts. Our classroom is a place where childhood can flourish. It is full of chatter, questions, movement, kindness and learning. There are 29 students and 2 teachers. It is an Integrated Co-teaching classroom, 40% of the students have special needs.

My Project

Our social studies units focus on family and community. The wooden blocks and materials I am asking for will allow children to incorporate play based learning into the curriculum. They'll have the opportunity to create their own community. They'll be able to create families and homes. Through building and role playing, they'll gain a deeper understanding of the curriculum being taught. Collaborative play teaches children how to cooperate with others. It encourages fluent language, listening, sharing and compromise. Many of the children struggle with these skills and need daily practice.

Your donations will provide my students with an opportunity to act their age and receive a rigorous education at the same time.

My students will be able to deeply connect with our social studies curriculum while "playing." As a donor, you will help foster the important, successful memories associated with first grade.
