Play Is Work for Kindergarten

My students need a set of dolls, a kitchen play set, a play barnyard and barnyard animals to engage in dramatic play. Play is a learning experience for young children.

My Students

Do you remember playing with toys in Kindergarten which helped you learn about farm animals? Do you recall using dolls and toy kitchen utensils to act out stories with friends? These are activities our young children need to construct knowledge and learn to play with peers.

I teach kindergarten in a public school in New York City.

Our school is one of the most internationally diverse communities in the country and we are so fortunate to have so many cultures represented. Our children speak many languages but children of every culture long to play and have fun. Play is part of their learning and as children engage in dramatic play, they socialize and acquire knowledge of the world around them. We live in a major urban center so learning about farms and the animals that inhabit them has to be done through hands-on manipulatives. Visits to a farm are possible, but daily familiarity to teach children about animals, cooking, and people who hail from different cultures must be done through props. For that reason I am also requesting multicultural dolls that match who we are.

My Project

Budgets are tight but young children need the toys to help their development. These are not frivolous items, but toys that will help children learn, engage, and interact. What better way to begin learning about different farm animals than to provide the props for children to use with their imaginations. Toys that are durable, washable, and can be used over and over with young children are essential to the early childhood classroom. Such dramatic play toys are available but require considerable financial resources. Are they expensive? They are well priced for the quality items they are, but financially beyond our reach when supplying an entire kindergarten classroom of children who play and interact together. The children will learn to recognize and identify farm animals they would not see in a city and could speak through the different dolls we are requesting.

The kitchen pots, pans and plates, the farm animals, the multicultural set of dolls, and the barn all offer a wide variety of dramatic play scenarios.

This is vital to early childhood development. Funding these resources would change the type of day our children have, and make it one of fun while simultaneously learning. Think of the joy children would experience while learning.
