This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Think back on your own kindergarten experience. Did you love coming to school, listening to stories, playing at recess or building with blocks? The magic of kindergarten is not only gaining the skills required to be a 21st-century learner but supporting our youngest learners with developing the executive functioning skills children need to thrive. The guided inquiry and magic of play will create lifelong learners who can collaborate and take risks. Research shows students who experience a quality early childhood education have stronger problem-solving skills, and the social-emotional skills needed to succeed in today’s job market. When children are nurtured as well as taught to read, write, and think critically, their growth can be endless. I love teaching kindergarten at a public elementary school in Los Angeles.
Our students come from a low socioeconomic background; all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and the majority of the students are English language learners.
However, statistics don’t tell the whole story. My students are inquisitive, hard-working, and caring. They will count, read, write, but most important, become kind humans ready to make this world a better place!
My Project
The pitched hum of play is a magical noise, children learn through play. It is their vehicle to learning. Play is hard work with fun tools and engaging materials, all designed to provide our youngest learner, hands on opportunities to discover and wonder. Sand, paint and books are the basics in an early childhood program.
The sand table is always a favorite choice, it provides a carefully curated opportunities for students to learn the alphabetic principle or practice counting.
Our sand table needs a refill, a reset, a makeover with new sand and wisely selected child sized tools sized exactly for little hands. We need new brooms to sweep up the escaped sand after the work for our day is done. Our sand table provides students a tried and true early childhood staple to spark curiosity and test out theories.
