Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is very diverse in that we have many English Language Learners which make up almost half the population of our school. Also, we are an all kindergarten school made up of approximately five hundred 5 and 6-year-olds. That's a lot of little bodies that can be influenced in a positive way.

I teach eighteen enthusiastic, eager, and energetic kindergartners at a Title I school.

Our school is in a very low socioeconomic community. Because we are in a high poverty community, all students at our school receive free breakfast and lunch through the community eligibility program. Most of my students have not had the opportunity to attend pre-k or had significant learning experiences in their homes.

My Project

Playing is a child's work. Children don't even recognize how much they are learning while they are playing. Because of the large population of English Language Learners, these toys and resources are the perfect opportunity to teach them valuable skills through play. EL students needs to hear spoken words multiple times a day to learn a new language and with these resources they will be able to interact with their peers and have multiple word exposure.

There is so much learning to be had while playing!

We have a set aside play time each day in kindergarten for students to just be kids. However, while they are playing they are engaging with their peers, learning how to take turns and share, building much needed conversational skills while increasing vocabulary and sparking creativity by using their imagination. I know these wooden toys would immensely foster learning for my students.
